What is IBS? The Facts
- IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a frustrating and often debilitating chronic illness characterised by diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating and spasms.
- IBS symptoms do not occur persistently in an individual. They appear to come and go over time often triggered or worsened by dietary factors and stress.
- IBS is the second highest reason for absenteeism from work.
- 1/3 of the population is effected by IBS at some point in their life.

Just because there are no abnormalities through testing doesn't mean irritable bowel symptoms aren't real. They occur because the bowel is not working in a normal coordinated manner. The intestines are a sensitive piece of equipment and serve as a useful guide to help monitor stress levels and diet.
How does stress affect the gut?
When stressed the body automatically reacts. This is called the fight flight response. This reaction is the body's way of getting ready to take action. The stress response is the body's alarm system causing several physiological changes. Muscles tighten, heartbeat and breathing accelerate and stress hormones such as adrenaline are released. Each of these normal reactions can alter the normal rhythm of the bowel causing diarrhoea, constipation and heartburn.
IBS treatment.
Conventional medical treatment can include a variety of medications, a high fibre diet, fibre supplements, and behavioural changes. The behavioural changes include exercise, lifestyle and dietary changes. Unfortunately this regime has not been proven adequately effective for a high percentage of sufferers. In addition many people find the side effects of the medication to be more noxious than the IBS symptoms.
